DNA Facts - Did you know?
Except for red blood cells, each cell in our body contains about 2 metres of DNA. Humans all have have approximately 100 trillion cells. Each DNA strand is tightly spiraled into 46 chromosomes. These chromosomes are arranged in coupled pairs. One side of the pair is inherited from our Mother and the other inherited from our Father.
Haemophilia is recessive disease connected to the X chromosome.
Women have two X chromosomes. That is why only females with the recessive gene in both X chromosomes actually develop Haemophilia. If they carry only a single recessive gene then they become carriers (transmitters) of the disease.
In the case of men, it's different.Men have only one X chromosome and if they carry the recessive gene they will also develop the disease.
The Jewish population were well aware of this fact, and did not circumcise sons of women known to be carriers.
