DNA Inheritance

Haemophilia is recessive disease connected to the X chromosome.

Women have two X chromosomes. That is why only females with the recessive gene in both X chromosomes actually develop Haemophilia. If they carry only a single recessive gene then they become carriers (transmitters) of the disease.

In the case of men, it's different.Men have only one X chromosome and if they carry the recessive gene they will also develop the disease.

The Jewish population were well aware of this fact, and did not circumcise sons of women known to be carriers.

DNA Facts - Did you know?

The human genome is defined as the complete DNA sequence of a person. An estimated 3,000,000,000 DNA bases make up a single genome. A base can be though of a single unit of DNA. In essence, you can think of a base as a building block of DNA and there are only 4 variants of such bases. These bases in turn are designed to couple with only one other base variant. It is the unique sequence of these pairs that define our genetic code.
