DNA Facts - Did you know?
A massive amount of DNA is held in the nuclei of our cells and the human genome is defined by this. What some people are unaware of is that there's also a second location where DNA is stored - Mitochondia . Mitochondria are the powerhouses of our cells. Some scientists speculate that way back in time mitochondria were simple cells that invaded our cells and then became an integral part of them. This is reasoned because mitochondria have their own DNA and replicate this DNA independently from the nucleus. When embryos form , they inherits half the father's genome and half the mother's. Mitochondria however only comes from the mother’s egg. Men do not have mitochondria. Mitochondrial mutations will pass to all of the resulting offspring. Mutations like this can be deadly. A new potential treatment has been engineered which introduces a 3rd person into the mix. A sperm fertilizes the mother’s egg but the resultant nucleus is then removed and placed into a donor egg that's had its nucleus removed but has normal mitochondrial DNA. The child ends up having the DNA of its mother and father, and the mitochondria of the donor as well.
Some of you may be familiar with autosomal recessive hereditary diseases.
In this scenario the recessive gene which is located on an autosomal chromosome, is inherited by all family members. A person can be unaware that they are a carrier of the gene if he/she has only one copy of it. As such the disease will not have manifested itself within that individual.
