DNA Facts - Did you know?

Sometimes following conception, a pregnancy may begin with twin embryos. More often than not the two merge before they reach a detectable size. Usually the event goes unnoticed. But in some situations you can end up with two distinct sets of DNA within your body. This is known as Chimerism from the Greek word chimera, a mythical creature - part lion, part goat and part serpent. This condition is not that rare and in most cases the person lives out their life unaware of it. Typically the condition is only revealed when a person requires an organ transplant and DNA testing is done to determine compatible donors. The Lydia Fairchild case was also an unsettling example of how this can play out. When Fairchild applied for welfare in Washington, her family was required to take a DNA test to prove their biological relationship. Imagine Lydia's shock when DNA tests showed that she wasn't even the mother of her children. A lengthy court battle ensured until eventually she proved that she was in reality, her own twin.

Paternity Testing Facts - Did you know?

In 2010, 24.87% of men tested for paternity were proved not to be the father, according to the AABB 2010 annual report. Paternity testing usually requires a cheek swab, which is non-invasive. If its parents are unmarried, a child may not have a legal father until paternity is established. Hair, toothbrushes and fingernail clippings can all be used for a paternity test. Grandparents, aunts and uncles can still be tested even though a parent may be unavailable.
